Monkeys to smash records

Postby arctic » Sat Jan 21, 2006 7:49 pm

The Arctic Monkeys are odds-on to have their debut album smash the fastest-selling debut record, according to reports.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is due to be released on Monday and both retailers and music industry insiders are anticipating huge demand.

The current fastest-selling debut album is Oasis' Definitely Maybe in August 1994, which saw 50,000 copies shipped in its first week.

But music store HMV predict that the Monkeys' first offering could sell a massive 200,000 copies, which would obliterate all that have come and gone before.

'We might be entering the Chinese year of the dog, but as far as the music industry is concerned 2006 is very much the 'year of the monkey',' HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo told the Daily Star.

'We haven't seen this level of excitement for a new artist since the Britpop-heralding arrival of Oasis more than ten years ago.'

Castaldo added that everyone has been amazed by how rapidly the Arctic Monkeys have shot to fame.

'It usually takes much longer for a band to develop mainstream appeal and the commercial success that comes with it but they seem to have managed this in just one leap - it's amazing how much impact they have had in such a short time,' he said.
