The Darkness at Sheffield Hallam FM Arena

Postby arctic » Mon Feb 13, 2006 3:41 pm

This gig was pretty cool.

One word to descibe it, exciting.

The opening of the show was, extravagent to say the least. Justin Hawkins was nowhere to be seen as the bands first song was "Knockers". The three other band members rolled out on stage with a beast of a drum beat and a chug a chug of a guitar.
This persued for about a minute of pure rock beats. Next was the voice of Justin "Oh Lord, I'm so Bored".
Still nowhere to be seen, the lights dimmed down and the arena plunged into "Darkness".
When the lights rose, Justin was flying around the stage on a giant set of "knockers" complete with flashing nipples.

Justin got the crowd going as normal "How you doing over there?
"At the back?
"Over there
"Under here"

Then to finish the opening, Justin went back to the stage dismounting his giant knockers and intoducing the bands new Bass player Richie Edwards by spanking his ass and calling him "Gorgeous"

Anyway, the band ended the song with explosions and fireworks to complete a grand opening and sending the crowd in raputures.

The band went through the set list rocking through the new album aswell as stopping off for a few older songs such as "Love On The Rocks With No Ice" which was a decent song.

Special mentions for songs were "Love is Only a Feeling" (played as a brilliant acoustic version) "Black Shuck" and the grand daddy of the night "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" which fucking rocked let me tell you!
Also, Black Shuck was played in a very AC/DC esque way.

Justin was left on stage twice on the night to play the Ballads, "Blind Man" and "Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" (played first half entirely on piano) which were great in their own way. I saw the ballads as a break from the heavy rock, which was welcomed, after 1 hour of harcore riffs, they seemed well placed in the set.

To finish the night, The Darkness played a fast exciting rockier version of "English Country Garden".

Overall, the night was very AC/DC orientated (which I loved, as AC/DC are the best band ever) and the crowd was pleased by Justin's witty comments and taunts to the crowd (he began playing Back in Black and Sweet Child of Mine, twice, to stir up the crowd).

If your a rock fan (AC/DC/Led Zepplin/Thin Lizzy) I highly recommend seeing the guys as they are great live (10x better than the album!)

Phew!

I don't really like them either, they just seem like a Queen tribute act/ novelty band

But I am a Rock fan, It seems you are all Indie Fans. Like I said, I am a hardcore rock fan, people who are big into ACDC, LedZ etc etc love this stuff. It's why they did well with Permission to Land, because it hadn't been done for a while.

I love em anyway :P

I'll take your rights away if you change shit like that again...

It says fuck all.

The Darkness aren't a tribute band simply beacause they don't play tribute songs.

Listen to their albums, pure rock. Has a tendancy to sound like older bands every now and again, but what band ISN'T influenced by another?

Millions of people loved Freddy Mercury, it's just ironic his voice sounds familiar.
