Small stage too small for the first sensations of London Calling.
The Brittisch punkrockers from Sheffield demolish the stage at the start of this London Calling. It’s not just sweat but also blood flowing in the small stage. Abandon is a gift few posses. Bromhead Jacket has it. And more.
SEEN: Bromhead’s Jacket, London Calling festival, small stage, 31-3-2006
MUZIEK: Britpop doesn’t get more punk than this.
PROS: It isn’t hard to break a sweat beneath the bright lights of a stage, especially when all are trying to enter the hall, and a nine thirty brings a packed venue. But if you stagedive into the crowd, and re-enter the stage with gaping wound and a broken guitar, if you beg the crowd that dropped you to find you another guitar because you want to play on, if your lips are caking together from the blood pouring from your brow and showing no signs of letting up, if even the people watching you from the screen in the main hall are screaming, then you’re not doing badly. But it’s not just that. Hailing from Sheffield these days automatically demands to be measured to the Arctic Monkeys. Bromhead’s Jacket survives this comparison. No because they’re better, but because they have their own style. And not just because of the blood.
CONS: Of course there will always be something. But who bleeds for their audience deserve nothing but praise. If anybody is to earn a minus, it’s the crowd. What is that!!! Someone brings you to extacy and you let them fall to the floor? Thankfully he gave you a second chance and – as a true Jesus – still offers a group hug full of forgiveness.
SUMMARY: "This is a night I never fucking forget!" Often heard at shows, usually after the second planned encore. Only rarely is it the truth. Bromhead’s Jacket’s show was such a moment.
APPRECIATION: 9 of 10
